Foot Care

Many nail problems can be prevented by wearing the right shoes and trimming your nails properly. To help avoid infection, keep your feet clean and dry. If you have diabetes, talk with your podiatrist before doing any foot self-care.

Get your feet measured (your size may change as you age). Wear shoes that are supportive and roomy enough for your toes to wiggle. Look for shoes made of natural materials such as leather, which allow your feet to breathe.

To avoid problems, trim your toenails straight across without cutting down into the corners. If you can't trim your own nails, ask your podiatrist to do so for you.

Wearing tight pantyhose, socks or shoes may increase your risk of developing hammer toes.

Corns and callus are easy to prevent.
 Excessive pressure is the cause of corns and calluses. Correct fitting footwear around the toes is key to avoiding this problem and promoting good foot health. The use of pads to relieve pressure, surgical management of bony prominence and/or regular podiatric care are the best options for prevention of corns and callus.

Avoid going barefoot in public places like showers, gyms and locker rooms. Wear thongs or sandals on your feet. The virus that causes warts spread easily in these moist settings.

Plantar Fasciitis: You can reduce the strain on the plantar fascia and the possibility of overuse by following the suggestions below:

:::Lose any excess weight

:::Avoid running on hard or uneven ground

:::Wear shoes or slippers that support your arch

To relieve mild symptoms you and try aspirin, ibuprofen or other medications as directed. Rubbing ice on the area may also help.

For severe pain your podiatrist may prescribe pills or injections. Physical therapy such as ultrasound or stretching exercises may be recommended.

If you have poor foot mechanics, your foot may be taped. This supports the arch and temporarily controls movement. Night splints which stretch the fascia may also help.
